Napoleon Bonaparte
Was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the latter stages of the French Revolution and its associated wars in Europe.
Napoleon was very short I heard, yet most pictures show him as a strong leader. Although I have seen a view paintings of Bonaparte depicted as a lesser man, lesser angry man.
Admiral Horatio Nelson
a flag officer famous for his service in the Royal Navy, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. He was noted for his inspirational leadership and superb grasp of strategy and unconventional tactics, which resulted in a number of decisive naval victories. He was wounded several times in combat, losing one arm and the sight in one eye. Of his several victories, the best known and most notable was the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, during which he was shot and killed.
Commanded the blockade of the French and Spanish fleets at Toulon
Battle of the Nile
a major naval battle fought between British and French fleets at Aboukir Bay on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt from 1–3 August 1798. The battle was the climax ofa naval campaign that had ranged across the Mediterranean during the previous three months, as a large French convoy sailed from Toulon to Alexandria, carrying an expeditionary force under General Napoleon Bonaparte. a direct vote of the qualified voters of a state in regard to some important public question.
Pope Pius VII
Napoleonic Wars
born Barnaba Niccolò Maria Luigi Chiaramonti, was a monk, theologian and bishop, who reigned as Pope from 14 March 1800 to 20 August 1823.
were a series of wars declared against Napoleon's French Empire by opposing coalitions. As a continuation of the wars sparked by the French Revolution of 1789, they revolutionised European armies and played out on an unprecedented scale, mainly owing to the application of modern mass conscription.
Battle of Trafalgar
(21 October 1805) was a naval engagement fought by the British Royal Navy against the combined fleets of the French Navy and Spanish Navy, during the War of the Third Coalition (August–December 1805) of the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815).
Continental System
the foreign policy of Napoleon I of France in his struggle against the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland during the Napoleonic Wars.
Use the terms to answer the following questions: Highlight terms used in each response
How did Napoleon rise to power
- Napoleon rose to power during the revolution. He was a great tactics man and then he grew stronger and stronger, gaining too much power. He went up the military ranks and then gained political power. He rose to prominence under the French First Republic and led successful campaigns against the First and Second Coalitions arrayed against France. He led a successful invasion of the Italian peninsula.
How did Emperor Napoleon come to dominate Europe?
- Through extensive military power and strategy. Then staged a coupe de tat to make himself fist council and then crowned himself emperor.
What were his defeats and why?
- Lepizig and The battle at Waterloo
What were Napoleon’s most important policies
- Napoleon gave high positions to those who earned it through merit and experience, and not to those who were rich or powerful.
He stabilized the economy and strengthened the Catholic Church in France.
He made slavery legal in the Caribbean colonies, so that the plantations could produce more cheaply, therefor earning money.

All these sayings starting with “we”
At the bottom peasants hold up the rich people
The poor people work to feed the rich people.
The middle people are fat
the higher ups are fancy
the soldiers are above the peasants and the fat fed men.
This is a social pyramid.
The sayings that start with “we” and end with a phase makes it seem like they don’t let anyone make decisions for themselves.
The peasants money and food is taken from them, and the rich people take it
Summary: The pyramid shows us levels of power, from higher up ranks to the lower people. The words insinuate that these people are doing something for you or as you, and you can't do it for yourself. Everyone else is controlling what happens around you. This whole image shows us the difficult life for people under an oppressive government, in this case Russia.

Russian Revolution
List five things you learned from this power point:
1) The lack of republican ideas, little industrialization, and the disbandment of Duma all lead to the downfall of the Russian government.
2) The army sides with the rioters, instead of fighting them off.
3) 1918 they killed the royal family, and established the Secret Police (KGB).
4) Treaty of Brest-Litovsk ended the war with Germany.
5) Created a civil war between the communists and the anti communists.
Long term Causes of Russian Revolution:
Long term Cause:
Explanation
Connection, comments, questions, connections…
The system of government and life in Russia was out of date.
All the institutions that supported the monarchy - such as the Church, the nobility and the faithful loyalty of the peasants - came from the Middle Ages.
Meanwhile, new, modern forces were threatening the monarchy such as the middle class, an industrial working class and Marxism.
What happened to make their callender out of date? This reminds me of the Mayan calendar and the recent discussions of the mystery behind it. As well as how the Mayan calendar supposedly predicts the end of the world, but here the russian calendar just didn't predict this downfall. It’s quite humorous.
He was closest to his Military.
In 1894, Nicholas II was an autocrat. He ruled alone and unquestioned, but he had a weak personality, and his power was increasingly based on the military might of the Cossacks and on the Okhrana (the secret police). These were two-edged strengths - they kept him in power, but they made him increasingly unpopular.
The police ended up betraying him and there had been a creation of a new secret police force, the KGB.
Size
Russia was simply too big to rule.
What about the people who rule China?
Behind in advancement
Russia had very little industrialization and most of its people were still peasants.
It’s hard to imagine life as a peasant.
Weakness
Russia was militarily weak, they were an ununited nation, they had a variety of ethnicities and people occupying the land and it was all a jumbled mess screaming for revolution.
This is the main area that seems to make recognition of the upcoming revolution.
Revolutionaries
the Social Revolutionaries and the Marxists - split into the Mensheviks who wanted peaceful change and the Bolsheviks who wanted a revolution - committed acts of terrorism such as the murder of Prime Minister Stolypin in 1911.
Very similar to the French Revolution.
Short Term Causes:
Explanation:
Connection, comments, questions, connections…
Russia at war
In 1915, the Tsar took over personal command of the Russian army. This meant that he took the blame for losing the war.
Like an army falling one by one by one.
Russia’s Care
While the Tsar was away at war the care of Russia was left in the hands of his wife, and she left the care in the hands of Gregori Rasputin.
This shows a point of view, i read in a few places that Rasputin was a great man, of god. In others i read he was a crazy drunken peasant. Which is true?
Bad conditions
Soldiers coming home from the war told of defeat, bad generals, no guns, no boots and no medical supplies. People not afford food, or supplies for themselves or their family.

(view changes)...5. Make a guess: How will the decisions made at the conference change Africa?
- I think the decisons in the conference will change africa in a way that, the imperialized areas will prosper while the native land will fall. As is the consequence of imperializing, they have to conform to the ways of the invading people, if the case is so. With the natives in africa, most spill into the shift of the slave life. Unfortuante as it may be, i find this as being the inevitable effect of the berlin conference. The strong thrive, and the weak fall.

It is what we have in surplus to offer your people, there is demand for opium in china, and we fill the supply in which fits the demand, more so even. Who are you to say my civil nation is barbaric? Do i not hear of the brutal murders in the august China. Do you not murder those found in possession of, selling, or using the opium drug? Did you not burn down all of our opium factories in protest? These acts of self righteous anarchy will not be tolerated by her majesty The Great Queen of England. {http://wfps.k12.mt.us/teachers/carmichaelg/percentage_controlled.gif}
Make some conclusions about Imperialism based on the information above
During this time in history, which country do you think was the most powerful? Why?
- Great Britain, because of their high population and strong colonization in areas plentiful with abundant resources.
- Colonization from Great Britain occupied most of the world, for instance Canada, Australia, and many areas of Africa.
During this time in history, which regions of the world were most sought after by the Europeans?
- Africa was most sought out by the Europeans due to its abundance of resources and slave labor.
- Many resources such as diamond, coal, oil, stone could all be found here.
Make a guess: How do you think imperialism impacted the continents outside of Europe?
- I think to some it may have benefited them, to others it did not. For example the natives in Africa did not find themselves in a pleasantry with imperialism, being taken for slave trade and having many of their people killed. In the America's however this was very good, we had easy access to our colonies and their resources, improving trade and economy.
The Berlin Conference
1884
{http://wfps.k12.mt.us/teachers/carmichaelg/berlin_conf.GIF}
Because of its size, surface features, climate, resources, and strategic importance, Africa became a prime candidate for conquest by ambitious European empires. Although Africa is physically remote from the power centers of Europe, North America, and Asia, it is surrounded by water and can therefore be reached easily from the other continents. This meant that the Europeans needed to establish rules for dealing with one another if they were to avoid constant bloodshed and competition for African resources. The Berlin Conference established those ground rules.
By the mid-nineteenth century, Europeans had established colonies all along the African coast and competed for control. The push for overseas territories was made even more intense by the Industrial Revolution and the need for cheap labor, raw material, and new markets. The competition between the Europeans often lead to violent conflict.
The conference was held in Berlin between November 15, 1884 and November 26, 1885, under the leadership of German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Although controlling the slave trade and promoting humanitarian idealism were promoted as the focus of the conference, the conference only passed empty resolutions about the ending of slave trade and providing for the welfare of Africa. In truth, the result of the Conference was a method of dividing the continent of Africa between the European powers.
Article 34 of the Berlin Act states that any European nation that took possession of an African coast, or named themselves as “protectorate” of one, had to inform the other powers of the Berlin Act of this action. If this was not done then their claim would not be recognized. This article introduced the “spheres of influence” doctrine, the control of a coast also meant that they would control the hinterland to an almost unlimited distance.
Article 35 determined that in order to occupy a coastal possession, the nation also had to prove that they controlled sufficient authority there to protect existing rights such as freedom of trade and transit. This was called the doctrine of “effective occupation” and it made the conquest of Africa a less bloody process.
The Berlin Act was an important change in international affairs. It created the rules for “effective occupation” of conquered lands, ensuring that the division of Africa would take place without war among the European powers. Through the Berlin Act, the European powers justified dividing a continent among themselves without considering the desires of the indigenous peoples.
While this appears extremely arrogant to us now, it seemed to them to be the obvious extension of their imperialism. The Berlin Conference is one of the most clear examples of the assumptions and preconceptions of this era, and its effects on Africa can still be seen today.
{http://wfps.k12.mt.us/teachers/carmichaelg/notepad001.gif} Answer these questions based on the reading below
1. List 3 reasons why Europeans wanted to take over Africa?
-Because of its size, surface features, climate, resources, and strategic importance
2. What was the Berlin Conference?
- The Berlin Conference established those ground rules, pertaining to competition for African resources.
3. What agreements came out of the Berlin Conference?
- The conference promoted humanitarianism. However, it only passed empty resolutions about ending slave trade and providing for providing for the welfare of Africa.
- Article 34 of the Berlin Act states that any European nation that took possession of an African coast, or named themselves as “protectorate” of one, had to inform the other powers of the Berlin Act of this action.
- Article 35 determined that in order to occupy a coastal possession, the nation also had to prove that they controlled sufficient authority there to protect existing rights such as freedom of trade and transit.
4. What considerations were made by the Europeans to the native Africans?
- the doctrine of “effective occupation” and it made the conquest of Africa a less bloody process.
- Through the Berlin Act, the European powers justified dividing a continent among themselves without considering the desires of the indigenous peoples.

Imperialism
Opener: Lin Zixu’s Letter of Advice to Queen Victoria
Directions:
Skim through your highlighting and note-taking
Identify and list the types of arguments the letter utilizes to persuade the Queen about her need to stop the smuggling of opium
Argument:
Example from letter
Righteous rule of Chinese
If there is profit he shares it with the people, if there is harm, he removes it
Flattery
The kings of your honorable country by a tradition handed down from generation to generation have always been noted for their politeness and submissiveness
Benefit of trade
The benefits of trade have been enjoyed by your rulers for 200 years
Greediness of those who trade in opium
Those who smuggle opium to seduce the profit themselves, and disregard their harm to others.
China’s lack of need for american products
Guilting
Modesty/ Guilt/ flattery
articles coming from the outside to china can only be used as toys.
Suppose there were people from another country who carried opium for sale to England and seduced your people into buying and smoking it
Certainly your honorable ruler would deeply hate that
speaking matter of factly
how would you feel if this was done to you
Queen victoria is better than the chinese and better than everyone
Her thoughts
Your majesty, Qing Qianlong,
I the magnificent ruler of the great country of Britain have received your plea. I had my people thoroughly look it over, and i have came to a decision. We may be the all mighty country, that you make us out to be in your marvelously worded letter, and we do indeed appreciate all that your country does for us. We wish not to harm the majestic people of china; what we wish is to make profit. We sell opium in exchange for tea and other trade goods, we do not sell it as use as a inhibilitator. We do not control the chinese people and make judgement for them on what to do with their lives, therefore we have no say in what they do with our products. They could be used as simple tea flavoring, or medicinal purposes.
Our great country does recognize the problem here, however. We see that this issue is causing tension between our two great kingdoms. That is what i would like to prevent, but not by stopping the sale of opium, instead, regulating it within the trade industry. As long as we can sustain prosperity among ourselves and our allies we can be sure to succeed in the course of our generation. Surely a man of god, such as yourself, a majestic ruler, can understand where i’m coming from wanting my people to prosper for the duration of their time on this glorious planet.
The reason you would not sell the hazardous chemical, to our country, because you know enough not to do so, and the consequences of those actions would be deadly even to the great Nation you have. The excuse is none but invalid to my ears when i hear it. That you would not sell it to us, therefore we should not sell it to you. It is what we have in surplus to offer your people, there is demand for opium in china, and we fill the supply in which fits the demand, more so even. You say we can not live without your goods, your tea, the fruits of your labor. However, could your people not live without our protection? Our trade? If we refuse to buy your goods, your economy falls into that of a desert economic depression. This seal helps encourage my nation because it is powerful in meaning. The waves, the color, the anchor. It shows that we are strong. If not always in numbers, but in our ways. We know that just as the ocean, we have always and will always be here. Even though not all have discovered our existence, we still lay here waiting for the day that we can spread our knowledge with the rest of the world. Until that day we are content with the solitude of being on our own. Although we know that we are not on our own for the great god Poseidon is on our side. The connection between the sky and sea, brings my nation great pride! The wind powering our ships, and most of our buildings are powered by either solar or water power. We are a very natural, and beautiful land. We take great pride in our appearance, and our wealth. We spend the majority of our money on preserving the land and keeping it as beautiful as it is. Today it is one of the only places you can find a family of koi fish in nature. Many people call us a communist nation, although we may have some feature to make us so, we found the most pleasant medium. As communist nations do, every month we go house to house to take up a collection for the preservation of land, or the formation of new statues, ponds, planting of gardens, the usual here. Although it is more of a donation, and the people here are all happy to donate. We are like a big family, as a leader i know all of my people by name. Our government is composed of people who want to volunteer to help out. We have no set government, it is whoever would like to help that day. Even though i am the set leader, as my father was before me, and his father, his father's father, and so on. My nation is the greatest nation in the world and we have the people to thank for that! {CaptureSeal.jpg}

World History
Nation: Koi の王国 (Koi Kingdom)
Location: An island in the ocean, off the eastern part of Japan. (Exact Location Unknown)
Language Spoken: A lost form of Japanese.
1. Waves: Represent our knowledge, our minds are as vast as the deep blue ocean.
The waves also represent our nations fighting force and willingness to protect the beauty of the ocean.
2. The color white in the waves displays our faith in the ocean, and the god Poseidon resembling his white hair.
3. The color blue in the waves represents our nation's pride, the will to protect the things we love.
4. The anchor represents our solidity, we are as solid as an anchor. None can defy us, and if they try our strength is uncomparable to theirs.
5. The anchors location, above the water, shows that we can not be defeated. Not even the worlds largest anchor can sink us.
6. The faded colors represent our age, and knowledge. Like a lost book, we are always here but not always acknowledged, yet hold the worlds secrets within our mind.
7. The bannor, and its shape shows that we are open to new ideas, even though we are set in our old ways.
8. The rope around the anchor, shows our skill in the sea. Our naval ships may be pre historic, but in the heat of battle, it isn't the weapon that defines the victor, it's how the weapon is used. In this case, how the ship is used.
9. The gold color represents our nation’s wealth.
10. The sky in the background shows our connection with the gods.
This seal helps encourage my nation because it is powerful in meaning. The waves, the color, the anchor. It shows that we are strong. If not always in numbers, but in our ways. We know that just as the ocean, we have always and will always be here. Even though not all have discovered our existence, we still lay here waiting for the day that we can spread our knowledge with the rest of the world. Until that day we are content with the solitude of being on our own. Although we know that we are not on our own for the great god Poseidon is on our side.
